The Achilles tendon has a load capacity. When the capacity of the tendon is exceeded, the tendon reacts and becomes an unhappy tendon.
The tendon is unable to cope with the demands placed upon it during activity and movement. This leads to repeated small amounts of damage to the tendon fibres. As a result, a tendinopathy develops.
Rest will not be enough to get rid of a tendonopathy. We find the best form of treatment for an Achilles Tendinopathy is activity modification, a tendon strengthening program and sports massage to the surrounding muscles and soft tissues.
With the correct treatment, an Achilles Tendinopathy can resolve within 3 months, allowing you to return to activity.
Ian came in to see us with Achilles pain. Our initial consultation revealed that Ian had increased his load with walking as he had a new puppy. The increased walking mileage alongside his love for riding his bike increased his Achilles tendon load. His Achilles tendinopathy brought riding his bike to a stand still and his wife had to walk the puppy on her own.
Ian completed his tendon strengthening exercises consistently and returned to riding his bike and walking his puppy within 2 months!
Ian was delighted with is recovery. Here is what he had to say –
“Great and effective treatment by Anna! After a long bout of pain from a damaged Achilles Tendon ( I blame my dog! Bless him!) I was finally fixed after only two visits. Well worth the reasonable price I paid. Great stuff Anna!”
