There are a number of structures that can become painful around the outside of the hip when walking.
Firstly, it is defined as moderate to severe pain at the Greater Trochanter (Outside of hip) and can be very sore to touch.
Pain is due to the gluteal muscle tendons becoming either compressed or overloaded, or both!
This happens because either your hip muscles are tight or you have increased your walking load.
Rest won’t be enough to get rid of the pain on the outside of your hip when walking. We find the best treatment is a strengthening programme, combined with massage.
Your pain will take 2-3 months to resolve with the correct treatment. However, without the correct treatment, it will continue to cause pain and impact your walking ability.
Sarah came to us with a sharp pain on the outside of her hip when she walked uphill whilst training for a charity walk. This was caused by her increase in training volume and frequency.
Sarah followed a progressive exercise programme alongside massage treatment.
They are now pain FREE and was able to complete her charity walk!
Sarah was very pleased with the outcome and now has the knowledge to continue to strengthen her hips to prevent the re-occurence of pain.
